New European electricity market design: Switzerland calls for inclusion in its establishment

by Lisa Bettoni

Integration of the increasing production of European electricity from renewable sources into the European energy market requires cross-border planning to prevent any economic, technical or environmental disruptions.

In October 2014, the German Federal Ministry for Economic affairs and Energy published a discussion paper about an electricity market for the energy transition (‘Ein Strommarkt für die Energiewende’).

Switzerland has submitted an official response to this paper: It is calling for inclusion in further discussions for shaping the future European electricity framework, as it aims to continue to play an integral role within the electricity market. It is signed by the Swiss Federal Office of Energy (SFOE), the Swiss federal electricity commission (ElCom), Swisselectric (the organisation of the large Swiss electric utility companies), Swissgrid (the Swiss national grid company) and VSE (the association of Swiss electricity industry). The major strength of this unified response is the inclusion of all key players from Switzerland’s electricity sector.
